About Us

A Scunthorpe mum and her premature baby were both given a 50/50 chance of survival after she developed pneumonia and flu while pregnant.

Emma Clay, from Scunthorpe, gave birth 12 weeks early to her son, Alfie, in 2016, weighing 2lb 13oz.

Alfie spent 10 weeks fighting for his life on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which became his temporary home

But the situation was much more serious for Emma and Aflie.

Emma said: "Me and Alfie were given a 50/50 chance of survival - that's how serious it was,"

"I had pneumonia and influenza at the time which led to me giving birth early. I was in a horrible state and just felt I couldn't breathe. I thought I wouldn't have long in this world but I wanted to fight for Alfie."

"You will never understand the worry and fear of giving birth prematurely if it isn't something you've never been through.

"My husband had to sign official papers of who he wanted to survive which must have been heart breaking for him to choose his wife or son."

Thankfully, Emma gradually recovered from the pneumonia, but she was left desperate when she found out her son - as well as fighting the risk of being born prematurely and the associated health risks - also had a rare condition called Craniosynostosis.

It is where a baby's skull does not grow properly and their head becomes an unusual shape.

Emma said: "He had to undergo major head surgery immediately because of the risks associated with Craniosynostosis."

Treatment is not always required, but Alfie's situation was more serious.

Luckily, the operation was a huge success for Alfie, who is now a happy, little boy who loves to play.

Emma began raising funds for Scunthorpe General Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit following the amazing care her son received.

"I'm very grateful to Scunthorpe General Hospital's NICU for saving Alfie's life. The staff were amazing throughout and we'd like to fund aise for them and give the money out."

With her husband Lee, they set up Scunthorpe Little Warriors Charity and continue to raise funds to support families going through the same stressful worrying time as well as support the Scunthorpe NICU itself.
